Fire at Edsa Shangri-La Mall started about 10:30p.m. Friday in the storage room of Rustan’s Supermarket at the basement. The fire struck a 100 square meter storage room of the supermarket. “The cement walls were six inch thick, and the room was enclosed, so the fire was contained in a small area, but the smoke kept spilling out,” Mandaluyong Fire Marshal Nahum Tarroza told the Inquirer. There were still tenants and customers (mainly moviegoers) in the mall when
the fire struck, and they were evacuated and led outside by mall guards.
As of Saturday, the smoke continued to spread through the upper floors, but fire authorities said that there was no danger of the fire spreading to the upper floors. They had to drill holes at the walls to let the smoke out. The cause of the fire is still unknown and currently under investigation.
