Parents’ Summer Survival Guide for Life’s Little Emergencies:
- Every medicine cabinet usually has a box of band aids but Dr. Wood recommends having butterfly band aids around. Helpful for minor cuts that need to come together, and waterproof, these are essential.
- Dr. Christine Wood often has parents apply Mederma for Kids on cuts or scrapes that are scarring. The product does truly help in minimizing the appearance of scars.
- Brace yourself for bug bites. For those stings and bites that are so common in the summer, Dr. Wood says parents can use an itch-stopping topical gel like the Children’s Benadryl Anti-Itch Gel. Dr. Wood suggests that if your child is having an allergic reaction to a bee sting, you can give your child a Benadryl or look for a product with diphenhydramine.
- If your kids experience that dreaded motion sickness on family road trips, Dr. Wood has a great suggestion. Since Dramamine comes with drowsiness, Dr. Wood used with her own son, Sea-Bands. The Sea-Bands work as acupuncture bands on the wrist and minimize motion sickness.
- For those children who are experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, Dr. Wood often uses a probiotic. She recommends using the USANA Health Sciences Probiotic (www.usana.com) since it is easily packaged. Dr. Wood says you can just throw it into something the kids are eating to soothe indigestion symptoms.
- Dr. Wood recommends the NoseFrida or “snotsucker” for young children with colds. She says the nasal aspirator works great for clearing children’s stuffed noses.
